Aluminum Wiring Remediation in Toronto
Homes built in Toronto between 1965 and 1975 were often wired with aluminum instead of copper. Aluminum wiring expands and contracts more than copper, loosening connections over time and creating a serious fire hazard. RK Power Electric specializes in safe, ESA-approved aluminum wiring remediation.
What to expect
There are two main approaches to aluminum wiring: pigtailing (adding copper extensions at each outlet and switch using approved CO/ALR connectors) or a full rewire. Pigtailing is the most cost-effective solution approved by ESA and the Ontario Fire Marshal, and it's what we perform in most homes.
We also replace all outlets, switches, and fixtures with CO/ALR-rated devices designed specifically for use with aluminum wiring. These devices have a larger terminal area and tighter clamping pressure to safely accommodate aluminum conductors.
Many insurance companies in Ontario will not insure homes with aluminum wiring, or charge a significant premium. After our remediation, we provide documentation that your home meets ESA standards - which most insurers accept for normal coverage rates.
